I can’t believe that it’s just under two months to go to ideaCity 2010! That’s right, there’s less than 60 days until many of you will spend three glorious ones basking in thought-provoking ideas and rich conversation with remarkable people. I can sense your anticipation, so I’ll get right to it. Introducing the first ten speakers to appear at ideaCity 2010 in our new home at Toronto’s Koerner Hall at the Royal Conservatory. Ranging in age from 13 to 88 and across a spectrum of disciplines, their fascinating lives and ideas will significantly impact the way you see the world. JULIANA CHEN – First Lady of Magic Juliana Chen is the hottest magician around! She is the ONLY woman to have won the World Champion of Magical Manipulation awarded by The World Congress of Magicians in Dresden, Germany. Born and trained as an acrobat and foot juggler in China, Juliana moved to Vancouver in 1988 and became a Canadian citizen. In demand worldwide from Las Vegas to Tokyo, she magically cleared her schedule for us. MALLIKA CHOPRA – Media & Wellness Guru She launched Michael Jackson’s Heal The World Foundation and authored two best-sellers: 100 Promises To My Baby and 100 Questions From My Child. Now, Mallika Chopra is the creative force behind intent.com an online community focused on personal, social and global wellness featuring blogs by Mallika, her father Deepak Chopra and others. JUDY COLLINS – Grammy Legend Judy Collins’ voice is just as sweet as it was in1961, when the Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter released her debut album, A Maid Of Constant Sorrow. Since then, her collaborations with Leonard Cohen, and her versions of Amazing Grace, Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns and Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now, which was entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame – have become legendary. TAVI GEVINSON – Fashion Wunderkind Meet Tavi Gevinson, 13-year-old fashion blogger and stylist. Her blog Style Rookie has enraptured fashion’s elite. She already has her own clothing line, is gracing the covers of fashion mags, and sitting front row at the world’s most coveted haute couture shows! ALISON GOPNIK – Developmental Psychologist Your baby is smarter than you think! In her books The Scientist in the Crib and The Philosophical Baby Alison Gopnik sets out to prove that generations of psychologists and philosophers were wrong in proclaiming babies to be irrational, egocentric and illogical thinkers. ERICA JONG – Iconic Author In 1973, Erica Jong was thrust into the public spotlight as millions devoured her gutsy and erotic debut novel Fear of Flying and fantasized about the "Zipless F*ck" (we’d spell it out in full, but want to get past your spam filters). Three decades, 20 books, and multiple literary honours later, Erica continues to be a powerful voice in forging feminist consciousness. HAZEL McCALLION – Political Powerhouse At 90-years-old, some of us might think it was time to retire. Not Mississauga’s feisty Mayor "Hurricane" Hazel McCallion. After 32 years in office, she’s become an icon, and intends to run again in October 2010 for an unprecedented 12th term! ASHLEIGH McIVOR – Olympic Gold Medallist It was a wild, gold-medal winning race for 26-year-old Ashleigh McIvor at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games! Her triumph in the first-ever ski cross event made front page news and all of Canada proud. TOBY ROSE – Toronto’s Own CSI If there was a CSI: TORONTO, the starring role would go to expert Forensic Pathologist Dr. Toby Rose, medical director of the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. Toby performs coroner-ordered autopsies, the results of which have been critical in resolving grisly murder cases. TRACY WORCESTER – Animal Rights Advocate Tracy Worcester is a former Paris model and pig-farming expert. Her hard-hitting documentary film Pig Business is provoking ire among American big business as it alleges their intensive farming techniques are responsible for environmental pollution, animal cruelty and health problems for nearby residents.
