ideacity 2014: Seventh Speaker Announcement

14/05/2014

As any of our past audiences know, ideacity is all about innovation and adaptation in a rapidly progressing society. This week’s speakers bring to the table an array of intellectual and artistic responses to a changing world, with unique approaches to everything from the small shifts within our own bodies, to the monumental ones witnessed on the global stage. Offering different perspectives on their fields, be they musical, visual or scientific, each of these presenters is sure to have you thinking of big issues in a different way. We’re eager to learn more about the research and experiences that drive their practices, and are sure that their presentations will be as engaging as they are thought-provoking.

Michael Fossel_210MICHAEL FOSSEL – Resetting DNA

To say that Dr. Michael Fossel understands the way we age would be a monumental understatement. With over 60 articles, books, and chapters under his belt (not to mention nearly three decades as a Clinical Professor of Medicine), he’s devoted his respected career to discovering and understanding the aging process, how to reverse it and, perhaps most importantly, the consequences of doing so. Since the publication of his first book, Reversing Human Aging, in 1996, he’s become a recognized authority on the science of age, and the most progressive ways to combat its onset. His latest book, Telomerase Therapy, to be published this year, will almost certainly reinforce that standing, and further illuminate this promising field of study. MORE…

Matt Ridley_210MATT RIDLEY – A New Perspective on Climate Change

Matt Ridley argues that human beings’ ability to connect, collaborate and co-operate gives our species an often underestimated capacity for change and social progress. His latest book, The Rational Optimist (2010), was long listed for the FT’s Business Book of the Year. Matt takes on contemporary pessimism to argue that, in spite of disasters and reverses, the world has been getting better and better for humanity over the last two centuries. It’s not important how clever individuals are, he argues; what really matters is how smart the collective brain is. Innovation comes from people and human exchange, not from government policy or elite diktats. MORE…

Edward_Burtynsky_210EDWARD BURTYNSKY – Global Landscapes

Edward Burtynsky is known as one of Canada’s most respected photographers. His imagery explores the intricate link between industry and nature, combining the raw elements of mining, quarrying, manufacturing, shipping, oil production and recycling into eloquent, highly expressive visions that find beauty and humanity in the most unlikely of places. Mr. Burtynsky sits on the board of directors for Toronto’s international photography festival, Contact and The Ryerson Gallery and Research Center, and his visually compelling works are currently being exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Canada, in the United States, Europe and Asia. MORE…

genghisbarbie_210GENGHIS BARBIE – Post-Feminist Chamber Ensemble
