ideacity 2014: Third Speaker Announcement!

One of our favourite parts of ideacity is that chance to see the world through the eyes of the world’s most daring and groundbreaking characters. This week, our latest wave of new presenters speaks directly to that sentiment – their unique perspectives will take you from the earth’s highest peaks, to the South African bush, to the forefront of the latest medical research. Add to the mix a vibrant (and local) ingenue whose musical talents will blow you away, and you have the makings of yet another incredible ensemble of bright minds and big ideas.

STEPHEN KOCH – Snowboarder – Adventurer – Mountaineer

Ever heard of Snowboard Mountaineering? If not, don’t worry – Stephen Koch coined the term, and is happy to explain exactly what it entails. His list of alpine ascents and descents include some of the most notable firsts anywhere in the world, most of which have never been repeated. He is the first person to snowboard all the major Teton Peaks in Wyoming, and the first and only person to snowboard on all Seven Summits, the highest peak on each continent. MORE…

FRANCOISE MALBY-ANTHONY – Encounters with Elephants

As the wife and partner of the renowned South African “elephant whisperer”, Lawrence Anthony, Francoise Malby-Anthony has spent years protecting some of the world’s most threatened species. As the head of the Thula Thula game reserve that she and her husband founded over 15 years ago outside Durban, Francoise has made it clear that she intends to continue the work that the two of them started. Their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed, by either the international community, or the creatures that they worked so hard to shelter. JOSEF PENNINGER – Immaculate Conception

Over the course of his lauded career, Josef Penninger has garnered no shortage of attention with studies and discoveries that continue to shed light on some of the most deadly conditions and diseases. In 2002, he accepted the appointment as founding director of the newly established Institute of Molecular Biotechnology of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, IMBA, and moved to Vienna. ANASTASIA RIZIKOV – Piano Prodigy

At only 15 years old, Toronto’s own Anastasia Rizikova is already one of the world’s premiere up-and-coming young musicians. A dedicated pianist since the age of five, Anastasia has wowed audiences across the globe, claiming competitive titles and securing performance engagements that individuals twice her age might envy. At age seven, Anastasia made her orchestral debut with the National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, and is currently performing numerous solo concerts and orchestral works in major US and Canadian cities. MORE…
