Our next four speakers are all accomplished in their respective fields. Two cartoonists who prove that the pen is mightier than the sword, a laughologist who is changing the way we think about laughing and an author who is writing about our dependency on computers, these speakers are giving us a new way to view the world around us.

Nicholas Carr

Nicholas Carr writes about technology and culture. He is the author of the acclaimed new book The Glass Cage: Automation and Us, which examines the personal and social consequences of our ever growing dependency on computers. His previous book, The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, was a 2011 Pulitzer Prize finalist and a New York Times bestseller. Read More

Wes Tyrell

One time country music crooner and fencing enthusiast, Wes Tyrell enjoys the enviable task of drawing Moses Znaimer’s alter ego “Prophet of Zoom” for Zoomer magazine.
Wes draws editorial cartoons for Yahoo Canada and trumpets this model of producing cartoons exclusively for digital audiences. In an era of roller coaster newspaper performance, the Yahoo cartoon continues to prove the medium is alive and well, and even resides in your pocket. Read More

Dan Murphy

Dan Murphy is a cartoonist and writer whose work has appeared in Maclean’s, Condé Nast Traveller, Equity, Vancouver magazine, Omni, Penthouse, The Western Voice, and Surfer. For 29 years he produced political cartoons, editorials, graphics, page-design, web-animations, and the Sunday illustrated column Mr. Pundit for Vancouver’s Province newspaper. Read More

Albert Nerenberg

Albert Nerenberg is an acclaimed director, hypnotist, and one of the world’s top experts on laughter.
Nerenberg directed Laughology, the first feature documentary about laughter for CTV. He’s the inventor of Laughercize, a laughter exercise technique and founder of the American Laughing Championships.
