John Polanyi

John Polanyi

Distinguished Nobel chemist Dr. John Charles Polanyi is a passionate and brilliant scientist with a deeply personal connection to advanced research.

Polanyi is a member of CIFAR’s (Canadian Institute for Advanced Research) Nanoelectronics program and is currently studying new methods of building tiny structures one molecule at a time.

Polanyi is a professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto. His research on molecular motions in certain chemical reactions is helping to forge a new method of manufacturing nanostructures called “molecular scale imprinting.”

In addition to being renown as a chemist, Dr. Polanyi is equally respected for his analysis of, and commentary on, the consequences of scientific research for policy and society. He has written more than 200 articles about peacekeeping and the control of nuclear armaments and he co-edited the book The Dangers of Nuclear War.

Despite working at the frontiers of complex advanced research, Polanyi tells a very human story about his and his colleagues’ science.
